MTC rolls out private LTE network at Rössing to power data-driven mining

MTC Namibia has deployed four dedicated LTE network sites at Rössing Uranium Limited, strengthening digital connectivity at the mine as operations become increasingly data-driven.

The rollout was carried out at the request of Rössing to address poor and, in some areas, non-existent network coverage across key operational zones.

The new LTE infrastructure delivers mobile voice and high-speed data connectivity, enabling real-time communication in an environment where reliability is critical to both safety and efficiency.

As mining shifts towards digital systems, including real-time monitoring, dispatch and safety alerts, stable and site-specific connectivity has become essential. The private LTE network is expected to improve coordination between teams and support faster decision-making on the ground.

MTC Managing Director Licky Erastus said the project is aimed at improving how work is carried out on site.

“This project is about improving how people connect and work on the ground. It is an enabler of safer, smarter, and more efficient mining operations. By bringing reliable, high-performance communication into complex industrial environments, we are empowering teams with the tools they need to make better decisions in real time and operate with greater confidence,” he said.

He added that the deployment reflects a shift in MTC’s strategy towards enterprise-focused solutions.

“In the past few years, MTC has adopted a business model, through our Enterprise Business Unit, focused on delivering customised enterprise solutions tailored to the specific needs of private sector partners. Today’s milestone is a clear demonstration of that strategic approach in action,” Erastus said.

Rössing Uranium Managing Director Johan Coetzee said the network is critical to modern mining operations.

“Today we commission the newly installed and upgraded four towers on our mine. Mining is more than heavy machinery, blasting, hauling and long hours of physical work. What often goes unseen is that mining runs on something just as critical: data. Real-time, reliable and constant data,” he said.

“Every truck we dispatch, every drill reading we analyse, every safety alert we depend on, all rely on strong, uninterrupted communication. Without it, we are not just inconvenienced, we are exposed. Quite simply, without reliable connectivity, we are operating without full visibility,” Coetzee added.

The deployment forms part of Rössing’s broader efforts to modernise its infrastructure and align operations with global mining standards.
