Telecom Namibia secures N$9.8m to expand rural network infrastructure under USF Phase 2

Telecom Namibia has secured a N$9.8 million subsidy from the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) to accelerate the rollout of next-generation telecommunications infrastructure in underserved rural areas.

The funding forms part of Phase 2 of the Universal Service Fund (USF) programme, targeting expanded network coverage, improved broadband performance and increased digital access in regions where connectivity gaps persist.

The agreement, signed on 9 April 2026, will see Telecom Namibia deploy new Radio Access Network (RAN) sites designed to enhance mobile broadband capacity and voice network reliability across remote parts of the country.

Telecom Namibia CEO Stanley Shanapinda said the project is focused on building resilient digital infrastructure to support long-term connectivity.

“By investing in advanced network infrastructure, we are extending reliable connectivity to areas that have historically been underserved, enabling access to digital services and supporting economic participation,” he said.

The rollout will target regions including Kavango East, Kavango West, Kunene, Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshikoto, Zambezi and //Kharas, expanding network reach into areas where commercial deployment has previously been limited.

As part of the programme, Telecom Namibia will provide free connectivity to schools and health facilities within the coverage footprint of the new RAN sites for a period of seven years, supporting digital education and e-health services.

CRAN CEO Emilia Nghikembua said the project is aligned with Namibia’s broader push to modernise its digital infrastructure and improve inclusive access.

“The Universal Service Fund plays a critical role in extending network infrastructure and ensuring equitable access to communication services. This phase will accelerate the deployment of connectivity solutions in underserved regions,” she said.

The project is expected to strengthen Namibia’s digital backbone, improve broadband access in rural areas and support the rollout of technology-enabled services across sectors including education, healthcare and local enterprise.
