Apple has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone and one of the biggest design changes to the iPhone since the device was introduced in 2007.
The new phone opens and closes like a passport, allowing the screen to expand to twice its size. When fully opened, Apple says the Duo features the company’s largest phone display and is its thinnest iPhone yet.
“iPhone Duo brings an entirely new design while preserving everything you love from an iPhone,” Apple Chief Executive John Ternus said.
The iPhone Duo will start at N$32,087 and is expected to be available from 23 October.
The launch also marked Ternus’ first major product announcement since taking over as Apple’s chief executive on 1 September.
Speaking at the company’s product launch event in Cupertino, California, Ternus said Apple’s goal was to create a foldable phone that did not compromise the traditional iPhone experience.
“I started the day with an intelligent personal hub and why there’s no product in the world that is better to be that hub than iPhone,” Ternus said.
“We think the best way to achieve that is with a foldable design. Others have created foldables that just feel like two phones stuck together … scrolling through vertical content feels compromised.”
Ternus said the Duo would “redefine the experience of using a foldable phone”.
