MTC positions 5G, fibre expansion to support Namibia’s digital economy

MTC is accelerating investment in 5G and fibre infrastructure as the telecommunications operator seeks to build the connectivity capacity needed to support Namibia’s expanding digital economy.

The telco has committed N$624.9 million in capital expenditure for the 2025/26 financial year, targeting network expansion, fibre deployment, infrastructure upgrades and the rollout of 5G technology.

MTC Chief Technical and Information Officer Dr Monica Nehemia said telecommunications infrastructure is increasingly becoming an economic enabler as businesses and communities rely more heavily on digital connectivity to access services and opportunities.

“Digital inclusion remains central to MTC’s purpose, as connectivity extends beyond voice and data services to enabling businesses, linking communities to opportunities, and supporting national development,” Nehemia said.

Speaking at the official opening of the 25th Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair (OATF), Nehemia said MTC’s investment programme is aimed at widening digital access while strengthening the infrastructure supporting Namibia’s growing connectivity requirements.

The expansion of fibre and 5G infrastructure is expected to increase network capacity and provide the foundation for greater adoption of data-intensive digital services by businesses and consumers.

For businesses, improved connectivity could support greater use of cloud-based services, digital payments, e-commerce and other online platforms, although MTC did not provide specific adoption targets for these services.

The company is also positioning connectivity as part of efforts to broaden entrepreneurship and economic participation.

MTC allocates at least N$1.2 million annually towards trade fairs and exhibitions across Namibia and has supported OATF for more than 20 years.

“MTC does not view sponsorship as simply branding. It is participation in national development and an investment in entrepreneurship, innovation, and the communities that sustain our economy,” Nehemia said.

The company argues that physical business platforms and digital connectivity can complement each other by helping entrepreneurs reach customers, investors and markets.

Nehemia also called on companies to incorporate environmental, social and governance considerations and corporate social investment into their operations as technology and infrastructure investment expands.

“True business success must be measured not only by balance sheets, profits, and market share, but also by the communities uplifted, the young people empowered, and the hope restored,” she said.

MTC’s N$624.9 million investment places fibre, 5G and broader network expansion at the centre of its infrastructure programme as Namibia’s economy becomes increasingly dependent on reliable, high-capacity digital connectivity.
