Namibia is exploring the use of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology to extend high-speed internet to remote industries and underserved communities following a collaboration between Africa Online and Radio Electronic (Pty) Ltd to evaluate OneWeb’s satellite network.
The two companies have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to assess the technical, commercial and operational feasibility of deploying OneWeb’s LEO satellite services in Namibia, with a particular focus on areas where fibre and terrestrial networks remain limited.
The assessment will examine how satellite broadband could improve connectivity across key sectors, including mining, agriculture, tourism, healthcare, education, logistics and government services.
Africa Online Managing Director Ingram van Heerden said the initiative aims to identify practical solutions for extending reliable internet access beyond existing network footprints.
“Namibia’s digital future depends on ensuring that connectivity reaches every sector of the economy, not only those located within established network footprints,” he said.
The companies will also assess the technology’s ability to provide resilient, low-latency broadband connectivity and backup communications for mission-critical operations.
Radio Electronic Chief Executive Officer Francois du Toit said Namibia’s geography requires innovative connectivity solutions that complement existing telecommunications infrastructure.
“Namibia’s geography presents unique connectivity challenges that require innovative and adaptable solutions. By combining our respective expertise, we have an opportunity to evaluate technologies that could strengthen national connectivity and unlock new possibilities for industries and communities operating in remote environments,” he said.
Over the coming months, the partners will undertake technical studies, commercial evaluations and market assessments to determine where satellite-enabled broadband can deliver the greatest value.
The findings will inform whether the companies proceed with a formal commercial partnership and the deployment of OneWeb’s satellite connectivity services in Namibia.
The initiative comes as demand for reliable, high-speed internet continues to grow across sectors increasingly reliant on digital technologies, while large parts of Namibia remain beyond the reach of conventional broadband infrastructure.
