Standard Bank warns digital fraudsters are exploiting online banking and e-commerce boom

Standard Bank Namibia has warned that the rapid growth of digital banking, online shopping and electronic payments is being accompanied by an increase in sophisticated online fraud, with scammers increasingly targeting consumers through fake investment schemes and online marketplace scams.

The bank said fraudsters are using digital platforms to impersonate legitimate investment advisers, online sellers and financial service providers, convincing victims to transfer money before discovering they have been scammed.

Standard Bank Namibia Fraud Risk Manager Colane Esterhuizen-Andreas said criminals are becoming more sophisticated in exploiting trust and urgency to target consumers across all demographics.

“Fraudsters prey on trust, urgency and the desire for financial gain. Whether it is an investment opportunity promising guaranteed returns or an online seller offering products at unrealistically low prices, consumers should pause, verify and question before making any payment. Staying informed is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud,” she said.

According to the bank, investment scams remain one of the fastest-growing forms of digital fraud, with criminals advertising fake investment opportunities that promise guaranteed or exceptionally high returns. Victims are often pressured to invest immediately before being asked to make additional payments to release supposed profits.

The bank also highlighted a rise in online marketplace scams, where fraudsters advertise goods at prices well below market value before demanding upfront payment. In many cases, the advertised products do not exist, and communication ends once payment has been made.

Esterhuizen-Andreas said creating a false sense of urgency remains one of the most effective techniques used by cybercriminals to manipulate victims.

“Scammers want people to act before they have time to think. We encourage consumers to slow down, do their research, verify the legitimacy of investment opportunities and sellers, and avoid sending money simply because they feel pressured or fear missing out on a deal,” she said.

The warning comes as digital banking adoption and e-commerce continue to grow in Namibia, increasing the importance of cybersecurity awareness and safe online transaction practices.

Standard Bank urged consumers to independently verify investment opportunities and online sellers, avoid making payments without proper due diligence and report suspicious activity to the relevant authorities, saying greater digital awareness remains one of the strongest defences against online financial crime.
