AWS hackathon showcases Namibia’s next generation of cloud talent

The AWS User Group Windhoek has showcased Namibia’s emerging cloud computing talent after hosting a hackathon that challenged students to develop cloud-based solutions to real-world problems using Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The “For the People” Hackathon, held on 25 July, brought together 25 students who designed, built and deployed cloud applications, giving participants hands-on experience with technologies widely used by businesses and organisations around the world.

The competition highlighted the growing capabilities of Namibia’s young technology professionals, with participants developing practical solutions while gaining experience in cloud architecture, application deployment and collaborative software development.

Students from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) dominated the competition, claiming all three top positions. Team NamTwin Go won the hackathon, receiving gold medals and AWS cloud credits, while Delta secured second place and Code Vengers finished third.

According to the organisers, the winning teams impressed judges with innovative solutions, technical execution and their ability to address local challenges using cloud technologies.

NUST Namibia and INCEIT Namibia supported the event by providing computer laboratory facilities and internet connectivity, enabling participants to build, test and deploy their applications throughout the day.

AWS User Group Windhoek leader Johannes Andreas, together with Hilma Uupindi, Romeo Pickering and Joana Kaneza, organised the hackathon. Projects were evaluated by a judging panel comprising Anesu Ashleigh Mwape, Sheldon Bhunu Shava and Nanvula Chikusi, while Natalia Stones was recognised for her continued support of the User Group.

Established in March 2025, AWS User Group Windhoek aims to expand cloud computing skills and strengthen Namibia’s technology ecosystem through technical meetups, workshops and practical learning opportunities.

Organisers said the hackathon, the group’s first large-scale hands-on event since its inaugural meetup last year, reflects growing interest in cloud computing and forms part of broader efforts to develop a pipeline of skilled professionals capable of supporting Namibia’s digital transformation.

The User Group said it plans to host more hackathons and technical events to further strengthen local cloud computing expertise and prepare developers for opportunities in the global digital economy.
